Jerod and I are jumping feet first into the LOORRS SR1 Class for 2013. It’s a new team with new builds by HRT and Benchmark. I’m going to be running one of the few ZX-10 Kawasaki Teryx cars out there, while Jerod is going to stick with the tried and trued Yamaha Rhino SR1 Chassis. Here’s a few shots of the tear down and motor mock ups from this week.
As an FYI we’ll be offing the 686 Rhino motor and the 840 Teryx motor to help fund our 2013 season. Both are built to the kilt Benchmark motors with Corillo rods and CNC Heads and all of Chris’ tricks. We have receipts for both motors. Both of these motors have low hours. Here’s a link to the classifieds ad. https://classifieds.utvunderground.co…tails&id=34129
We’ll be running the SoCal Regional Series, and jumping over to the Arizona Series to capture the SR1 Championship to spoil the Wellers fun. I’m sure Cory or Jason Weller will jump in here to give us the details on how the SR1 Championship will work in 2013. We run a couple of their Arizona races, they run some of ours SoCal races and then we combine points for an SR1 Champion.
The HRT boys are on it. Todays work included:
– zx10 motor removed from the salvaged street bike
– zx10 motor is in and mounted in the car
– subframe is welded
– center carrier installed.
The only Dif left is the rear Teryx. The front teryx is sold and Jerods Rhino difs went like hot cakes. The Rhino summers bros and gorilla axles and CV’s are available but the Teryx axles and cv’s are going into the Fetching Mrs Lorenz car.So this is what we have left:686 Benchmark built Rhino motor complete with clutch (fresh)
840 Benchmark built Teryx Motor complete with clutch (fresh)
Teryx rear dif 19hrs on it
Rhino long travel axles and CV’s front and rear Gorilla and Summers BrosSome more progress. Headers go in next and need some fabrication. It looks like we’ll be using the stock titanium unit and scavenging some Ti from the R1 exhaust as Weller doesn’t make a kit for the ZX10. A Weller R1 header kit will be used and fabed together for the SR1 car. I recall Jason at Weller saying they have a self weld together header kit as most of the cars get 1 off headers.Seeing as Jerod has no legs, we’re going with a Rekluse automatic clutch and Todd at HRT is brainstorming the hand controls. Taking 1 piece of the puzzle out of the equation is a bonus. He’s going to have a busy cockpit even with an auto clutch. Put some new rubber on the Race Rig tonight.Upped the trailer rating to load range E and 3500 lbs. I had the Fetching Mrs Lorenz’s rims off her Toyota 4×4 waiting for this day. Steel silver take off from 2001. I think I’m going to black them out and run giant white vinyl reflective stars on them to be different and to match our Military theme.Upped the truck to load range G 4540lbs 265/70/19.5 commercial tires on Rickson Wheels. Amazing Craigslist find as 265 are very hard to come bye as used take off.
Weller SR1 hubs on Mason Arms and Evolution shocks.
I’m reusing the custom Benchmark Dual Muffler setup that exits behind the passenger seat. All tubes off of each cylinder are equal length and run 2 into 2. We’re debating a cross over tube near the collector. Going over a new radiator layout tonight. The Wellers are telling me that a stock Honda Civic radiator was the cause of many of their issues early on. Going with a bigger system cured their woes.I just hate changing things up from the existing Honda Civic setup thats already in the car because all of my existing tin will need to be redone. The tin work on my car is immaculate as it sits, I’d hate to change the tunnel setup to accommodate a bigger radiator. The stock ZX-10 radiator may be a good supplement to the existing system? Doing work.If you want unique, you need to get your car in line over at HRT. These boys are pulling off some amazing arms for the ZX-10 Teryx build. The original plated HRT 5″ over arms are now on Momma’s car. We sacrificed the Race Car’s arms for Suzy’s car over the New Years weekend. Instead of swapping them back to the race car after the weekend in Glamis, I sent Todd on a mission to build some trick, lighter radiused custom arms for the race car.Mission partially accomplished.SR1 header progress and preliminary hand controls. The gas and brake pedals are removed from the car.
Gauge mounted on the steering column, and wire loom extended.
The impromptu photo shoot last night fell together nicely.
I can’t tell you how stoked I am on the plans we have for our team. I am soooooooo honored to be at the ground floor of the project making it a come together week by week.
It breathes fire today.
I’m not sure how we landed a couple of beautiful tech stickers, but we did. I saw a couple of familiar faces along the way. It’s good to be back a LOORRS. Pro Photog to Racer Hack after a 2 year hiatus.
First race for the MinuteMen Racing in the AM.
My mid back and ribs are feeling it right now. That was not pretty. I Took 5th none-the-less! We’re awaiting Jared’s results. I’ll take these results with a little pride, as it was Jared and my first race ever. It was the first time these cars had laid eyes on a race track as well. Fresh meat all around per say.
I was able to grab the Legend, Randy Anderson of Walker Evans Racing, Father of the Champ RJ Anderson, to spot for me….
It was classic:
“Go, Go, Go, Ride the Cushion… watch the inside… throttle out harder and bit smoother, don’t mash the pedal… that was good, do the same thing again in this corner”
I’ll be dreaming about the race tonight, no doubt. I was somebody for 15 minutes, with the best of the best crew chiefs in Off Road in my ear.
Here comes the excuses:
1) Shock setup needs major help from Walker Evans. I pancaked the faces of the rollers, and the plowed the face of the next roller ridiculously hard. This is how I wrecked my back. It happened every time no matter the line or speed I took. I’m calling the Chiropractor ASAP.
This car was valved to carry much less speed than it does now. This stock ZX10 is obnoxious fast with 190hp compared to the Teryx Motor 70-80hp. The power to weight ratio as it sits, rivals that of a Pro-Lite V8 Truck.
2) Chain alignment needs some love. That means the motor needs to come out and new machined spacers need to go in. If I didn’t tighten the snot out of the chain it would bind and skip teeth when I laid into the throttle. The sprocket alignment is off about a 1/8″, and its crossing up the chain not allowing it to roll over the sprockets freely.
3) An aluminum foot rest needed to go in as a dead peddle so I don’t get my left foot stuck under the brake pedal
4) More “Go, Go, Go”
A special thanks to Mike Cohen and RacerX for the help in the radio department. Their Vertex Radios with the LCD display saved the day and allowed me to take in a proper schooling, corner to corner, from Randy.
What an AMAZING way to kick off MinuteMenRacing.com. Lucas Oil, you guys put on one heck of a show for us. Thanks for giving us a venue that our Wounded Warriors are proud to be a part of.
5th and 13th, not to shabby for a couple rookies fresh off the boat.

Graphics will be in the works before the next Race. Do you have a guy you like to use here locally. Designs and ideas are floating around in the truck as we speak right now on the way home back to the Ranch in Ramona. We’d be honored to have you and UTVunderground Team up again like its 2009.
I have to admit, I’m slightly more stoked behind the wheel of a silly expensive SR1 right now, compared to being on a LOORRS Track behind a silly expensive camera lens shooting for the Underground.
I’m not sure why it took so long to get power steering in the car, but I finally took the plunge and had HRT Motorsports install this SuperATV.com power steering kit.
